I have ordered material for my greatcoat so I have made the commiment. My question to the members is what model coat do I make? I want to put together an 1870 Infantry impression. Would every soldier be wearing an 1867 model or woudl ther be 1859 models in teh ranks as well, or older versions? In the American Army at that time they would come out with a new model and it woudl take a while before it made it to the troops. There would be a period of transition. I assume that this would be the same in the French Army as well. I am an older guy so my impression would be someone who has been in the army for a while. Would I be wearing an older coat in 1870. How many 1867 coats would have been made and issued by 1870. Would new recruits get them first or would they get the older coats and the old hands get the new? My gut reaction is to make the 1867 but I would like some input from the group.
My next question is what do I use as a pattern. Is there a JMO for 1867 with plates showing the overcoat pattern? Do I use the 1859 pattern with the collar chages?
