Hello,
Thank you so much for this generous gift.
The most impressive photographs are those of the cuirassiers regiment, in the land of Chalons. An unique opportunity to see a deployed unit, just like extracted pictures from an "improbable antique movie".

About the veterans and NCOs' photographs from the zouave regiment, there is a striking resemblance between the French soldiers  enrolled in these regiments and the natives from the regiments de tirailleurs algériens :  the hairstyle seen on the photograph of the "barbershop" in Chalons  is very closed to this last, extracted from an old exemplary of the "Uniformes" magazine, that shows a tirailleur's profile.

(Perhaps the hairstyle was in relationship with the way to wear the chechia and to prevent it from a falling down).

Thanks also for the photos (and thanks to Vissarion), from the officers of the zouaves, guard regiment. Those with the captain Chazotte are specially of interest :
On the first photograph, taken at Chalons, 1857, Chazotte is awarded with the Legion d'honneur, (Knight March, 3, 1854) ; the Sardinian medal, "Al Valore Militare" , given to 15 officers & NOCs of the Zouaves guard ; and the British Crimea campaign medal (with two bars, likely Inkermann & Sebastopol).

On the group of officers, taken at Nice, circa April to June 1860,  Chazotte has added the commemorative medal of the war in Italy 1859, given to 1.841 Zouaves de la garde, between December 21 1859 and January 31 1860.

On the third photo, as "capitaine adjudant-major" (promoted March 19 1860), he is wearing his Légion d'honneur ; the commemorative medal of Italy, 1859 ; the third class of the Russian order of Sainte Anne ; the Sardinian Al Valore Militare for Crimea ; a second similar medal for Italy ; and his British Crimea war medal.

May be less than 30 French veterans have been awarded twice with the AVM medal ; Chazotte has received his second medal, after a correcting list published June 25, 1860, established in consideration of the death of the primitive holders, or eventual sentenced soldiers.
Such substitute - medals, given late in 1860 or in the beginning of 1861, were mainly struck in France ,(by Lemoine house in Paris, for example), and have a ring suspension in spite of the original Sardinian stirrup suspension. (The difference can be seen of the photo)

The Ste Anne order is also of interest.
After Vissarion, four companies were sent to the city of Nice, on April 17, 1860, as an escort of honor for the Russian dowager impress Alexandra Fiodorovna, Tzar Nicolas the First's widow. Suffering from severe tuberculosis (she will die in November 1860), she was sent in Nice from October 18, 1859 to May 31, 1860.
At the occasion,  eight French officers (or more ?) were awarded with Russian orders, on June 20, 1860 :
General Charles Auguste FROSSARD : 1st class of the Ste Anne order
Staff colonel Auguste Adolphe OSMONT : 2nd class of the Ste Anne order
Major (chef de bataillon) Victor Louis FEVRIER, of the Zouaves de la garde : 2nd class of the St Stanislas order
And five captains from the same regiment  awarded with the 3rd class of the Ste Anne order :
Martial CHAZOTTE ; Charles Félix DESCHESNES ; Constant DE MUTRECY ; Joseph Hommebon RICHAUD ; and ...
Victor ANDRIEU, seen of this photo taken in Perpignan (Hernagalt ?), when retired as captain at Camou (Ariège) ; wearing his Légion d'honneur , the Turkish 5th class Medjidieh (Crimea) ; the 3rd class of the Ste Anne order ; the Crimea war medal (3 claps), and the Italy 1859 war medal.
As Chazotte, he was allowed to wear this Russian order on February 5, 1861.

(By the way: sorry for my awful English ! )

Bonjour
